One of our goals at Maui Living Furniture is to increase awareness about steps we can all take that have a positive impact on the environment. Most of us are aware of ways to reduce our consumption of natural resources like not leaving the water running while brushing your teeth and driving fuel efficient vehicles, carpooling, etc. Buying home furnishings that are manufactured using sustainable materials and practices is another way to create positive and permanent change. As more consumers demand eco-conscious options for all products and goods we not only have the opportunity to conserve our natural resources but to also create new jobs in a developing industry.

Did you know that there are more chemicals in a conventional mattress than in a barrel of oil? Most mattresses are made completely out of petrochemicals–synthetic, toxic materials like polyurethane, polyester and flame retardant chemicals. These materials put out toxins into your bedroom all night long, including PBDEs, formaldehyde and more. These chemicals are known to cause health problems, including cancer, immune system malfunctions, insomnia, fatigue and more.

Studies have found that most Americans  who undergo testing have fire retardants stored in their bodies, and the most likely source is from the furniture in the home. Babies and children, who are most vulnerable to its effects, are showing the highest levels.

In addition, a high percentage of furniture contains toxic chemicals such as the formaldehyde used in many finishes and glues. Studies have found many of these chemicals to be linked to cancer, birth defects, hormone disruption, and reproductive and neurological dysfunction. These toxins are particularly dangerous to infants and children.

We have learned that not all “green” is created equal, so we are here to help answer your questions.
